The Dunedin
Osprey Cam
is a project
in progress...
The goal is for Dunedin's
residents, visitors and students to be able to look into an Osprey nest
on-line to see eggs when they are laid, see the eggs hatch and watch the
development of the young Osprey until they fledge. The Osprey nest that
was selected for this project is located at St.
Andrews Links Golf Course. This couple of birds has been prolific over
the years and is very comfortable with people since they are next to Alternate
19 and are located just above the practice putting green. |
Project Updates...
At this time, the old nest
has been moved to a new pole and platform. The original nest had been constructed
by the Ospreys between two lights on a pole that shined on the putting
green. Unfortunately the light pole was severely listing. In addition,
several Monk Parakeets had nested in the lower parts of the Osprey nest.
This is dangerous because these parakeets commonly transmit parasites to
Ospreys and can endanger their health.
By the end of November 2008,
the goal is to have the camera installed. Then it will be show time!!!

A major component
of this project is education. Garrison-Jones and Cypress Woods Elementary
Schools will be our pilot schools. Barbara Walker is developing the
curriculum and the goal is to have materials available for all 4th and
5th grades in Pinellas County. Clearwater Audubon Society did funding
for this part of the project.
In the spring of 2009, there
will be a benefit golf tournament to raise moneys for expenses related
to the DunedinOspreyCam. The Osprey Open will be held at the St.
Andrews Links Golf Course www.saintandrewslinks.com where the nest and
camera are located.
Blackwater National Wildlife
Refuge on the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland already has a well established
web cam on an Osprey nest that you can see. Visit the website by
clicking here. The nest is empty right now because it is winter there,
but it gives you a good idea of how an Osprey cam and web page are set
up. You might see an eagle on the platform because they apparently
use it during the winter not for nesting but as a vantage point while hunting.
